STYLIST SECRETS: 5 Little-Known Reasons Why Your Hair Is Dry

April 20, 2022
If your hair has started to feel dryer than usual these days, you’re not alone. In this blog post, pro-Hollywood hairstylist Cassie Russek lets us in on five little-known reasons why your hair may be feeling dry... and key products that you can use to rehydrate.

1. Over-washing your hair

We all love freshly washed hair (especially when it smells of HASK shampoo) but washing more frequently than your hair needs can cause dry strands and frayed ends. Why? Simply put, over-washing strips your hair of its natural oils. Depending on your hair type, try out washing your hair no more than a few times a week—and make sure that you follow up with a really nourishing conditioning routine. For dry hair, Cassie says: “Always condition and always use a leave-in conditioner, like the HASK Argan Oil 5-in-1 Leave-in Spray or the HASK Argan Oil Miracle Damage Repair Cream.”

2. Cold weather

While our Aussies winters aren’t quite as harsh as some, when the mercury drops, our hair becomes drier. As Cassie explains, cooler temperatures and harsh winds can deplete our hair’s natural moisture levels. So, when wintertime comes around, make sure that you step up your moisturising haircare routine—that means more hair masks and leave-in conditioners. Our top recommendation? The HASK Argan Oil Deep Conditioner. This reparative treatment seals the hair cuticle and provides a protective barrier between your hair and the weather around you.

3. Not using the right products for your hair type

Understanding your hair type, texture, and specific needs is really important when fighting dehydration. For example, curly and coily hair is naturally more prone to being dry as it is more difficult for the natural oils to travel from the scalp to the ends than for straight hair. Coarse hair (which means your individual hair strands have a wide diameter) is also more prone to dryness than fine hair (which means your individual strands have a thin diameter). Learning your hair type and texture is a big step you can take to figure out how best you can improve your hair’s hydration. If you have curly hair or if you have coarse hair, Cassie’s top tip is to start by using a HASK Deep Conditioner once or twice a week to ensure that your locks are receiving the extra moisture boost that they deserve.

4. Regular heat styling

“No matter your hair type, if you apply heat to your hair, it is more likely to become damaged and dry,” says Cassie. There’s really no way around it! Too much heat = more dry and damaged hair. The best thing to do? Save heat styling for special occasions only. But if you really can’t part with your heat tools? Use the following two tips. Number one: Always (ALWAYS!) use a good heat protectant before styling. Choose from the HASK range of 5-in-1 Leave-in Sprays, with a spray made for every hair type. Number two: Cut down on your hot tool time by extending your hairstyle for longer. Choose from HASK’s range of Dry Shampoos for the added bonus of a volume boost.

5. Not deep conditioning enough

Contrary to myths, Cassie explains that the right deep conditioner will NOT weigh your hair down. And if you’re battling with dry hair, regularly using a quality deep conditioner is one of the most effective steps that you can take. HASK’s range of deep conditioners for every hair type have you (and your dry hair problems) covered. Pro tip: for hair that is dry due to damage, try the new HASK Miracle Damage Repair Creamthe new formula has been specially formulated to seal in moisture and protect hair from the damage and dryness caused by heat styling and environmental stressors.   Were any of these reasons familiar to you?
