Are you looking to bring out your absolute best curly/wavy hair? Learning your curl type is the first step toward taking better care of your curls. The second step is investing in high-quality products that are just right for what your waves, curls, or coils need to thrive. Read on to discover our top tips for creating your perfect curly hair routine.
- Figure out your curl type
Understanding your unique curl pattern is the first step toward perfecting your curly hair routine. When working out your curl type, keep in mind that many curlies have more than one curl pattern! It’s likely that your hair falls into more than one category (i.e., your hair might be a 2B-2C or a 3B-4A).
Here’s our beginner’s guide to understanding your curl type.
WAVY HAIR:
Type 2A hair has slight or ‘soft’ waves to it which naturally form when air-dried.
Type 2B hair forms large S-shaped waves. Think loose, bouncy beach waves.
Type 2C hair is deeply wavy hair that forms small to medium S-shaped waves.
CURLY HAIR:
Type 3A hair forms loose spiral curls. Think large, soft bouncy curls.
Type 3B hair has more defined ‘corkscrew’ curls which really bounce up when dry.
Type 3C hair has tightly defined corkscrew curls that spring back a lot.
COILY HAIR:
Type 4A hair has small and distinctly S-shaped coils which form tightly looped rings.
Type 4B hair is kinky hair that forms a small zigzag pattern rather than more circular curls.
Type 4C hair has very tightly coiled strands which form a very small zigzag pattern that wraps around itself.
- Create the ultimate routine for you
Now that you’ve figured out your curl pattern, it’s time to start taking care of your curls. When perfecting your curly hair routine, pro hair stylist Barry Lee Moe says: “
Let the curls speak to you, they will tell you exactly what they need. It’s important to follow the road map that exists in front of you and use the right product combination to support the curls.”
