Winter Haircare: How to Take Care of and Protect Your Hair This Winter

During wintertime, our hair has different needs: cold dry weather and lower humidity levels dry out most hair types and can often leave our hair looking dull as well as more susceptible to damage and breakage. By forming a winter haircare routine, you can take care of your hair and protect it from damage throughout the colder months. Here are our top winter haircare tips and tricks.

  1. Boost moisture levels

In winter, lower humidity levels and long periods of time spent indoors with the heater on are two big factors that can zap the moisture from hair and leave it feeling dry. For most hair types, dryness is a regular issue that picks up during wintertime!

To replace moisture lost in winter, try swapping out your regular shampoo and conditioner for a more moisturising option. For straight hair types, the HASK Argan Oil Repairing Collection is the perfect recipe to get your locks well-moisturised and back on the road to health. Providing your hair with a restorative dose of argan oil, every wash works to repair breakage and smooth split ends.

If you have wavy, curly, or coily hair, opt for the HASK Curl Care Collection—purpose-designed to provide the extra hydration needed by curly hair, this moisturising collection will protect your curl texture from damage and frizz with its blend of coconut oil, argan oil, and vitamin E.

  1. Wash your hair less often

While this may sound slightly counterintuitive at first, washing your hair less during winter is a great way to protect it. While there are benefits that come from washing your hair less all year-round, during cold, dry weather it’s particularly important to give your hair time for its natural oils to build up between washes.

In fact, over-washing your hair strips it of its natural oils, which work to keep the hair moisturised and protected from the elements. This is especially true for curly hair, whose natural oils take longer to travel from the scalp to the roots.

This winter, try extending the time between your washes by an extra day, or two if you can, and see how your hair reacts. While your hair may need a short adjustment period to get used to your new routine, you’ll likely soon find that your hair and scalp react well, and you can go with a day or two more between washes during winter.

  1. Add in treatments to keep hair shiny

When exposed to the elements and harsh aircon, our hair can sometimes become more dull and even a little lackluster in winter. Just as you may find that you need to up your skincare routine with more hydrating masks and protective serums, the same is true for your haircare routine!

To better protect your hair and keep it looking shiny and healthy this winter, add a weekly hair mask to your wash routine. For a moisture boost, we recommend the HASK Argan Oil Deep Conditioner. For a strengthening boost that delivers high shine, try the HASK Keratin Protein Deep Conditioner.

Bonus tip: Take care of your scalp

Like the rest of our hair (and skin) in winter, our scalp can often suffer the effects of winter weather, leading to dryness and sometimes dandruff. Be sure to give your scalp a little extra love this winter with a scalp mask. Try our award-winning Tea Tree Oil & Rosemary Hair & Scalp Treatment Mask for a soothing and hydrating scalp refresh.
