Stylist Secrets: Tips for Starting Your Curly Hair Journey

Are you new to caring for your curls or waves? This is where you should start! In our latest blog, we speak with two professional hair stylists who they share their top tips for beginners on how to start caring for curly hair.

Choose haircare made for curly hair

When embracing your naturally curly hair texture, professional hairstylist Cassie Russek recommends the first step is selecting haircare made for your hair type. “If you’re noticing your hair is growing out coarse or curly, the key is to moisturise. You need to keep your hair hydrated—much like our hands need lotion, your hair needs conditioner.” For curly haircare beginners, Cassie can’t go past the HASK Curl Care range. “HASK makes a great Curl Care line for thick, coarse, or curly hair, with a shampoo and conditioner that is so thick and luxurious,” shares Cassie.

Embrace deep conditioning

For all curly hair types, proper hydration and conditioning are absolutely essential! And if you are new to embracing your naturally curly texture, adequate conditioning can make a big difference. “My advice for wearing curly hair for the first time is to embrace deep conditioning!!!” says Cassie. “HASK’s Deep Conditioners work small miracles. They hydrate, soften and help eliminate frizz. Be sure to use the 5-in-1 Leave-In conditioner, and deep condition once a week using a HASK Deep Conditioner! The Curl Care Intensive Deep Conditioner with coconut oil and argan oil will leave your hair so moisturised and healthy.”

Detangle properly and dry carefully

When it comes to bringing out your best curls, going back to basics (washing, detangling, and drying) makes all the difference. Pro hair stylist Lori Mccoy-Bell shares her ultimate step-by-step routine for beginners: “Always use a moisturising shampoo and a detangling conditioner. Comb through the conditioner with a wide-tooth comb to get any knots and snarls, so that when you do your final rinse, it will be tangle-free. It’s important to squeeze your hair with a microfibre towel or even a cotton T-shirt. Don’t vigorously towel-dry your hair. All that does is rub your cuticle layers together and cause damage.”

Use hydrating, curl-enhancing products

Finally, simply adding a small amount of curl-enhancing products to your routine can go a long way when it comes to defining and enhancing your natural curls. For beginners to curly haircare, Lori recommends: “Gently comb your hair in the desired direction and add the HASK Curl Care Curl Defining Cream. As you work through your hair with the product on your fingers, you can gently scrunch to bounce up your curls. Once the hair is dry, add a small amount of the HASK Argan Oil Hair Oil.”
