STYLIST SECRETS: 5 Tips for Maintaining Vibrant Hair Colour

Do you find that your hair colour is fading faster than you’d like? Keep that straight-out-of-the-salon look for longer and maintain more vivid, healthy locks between appointments with pro Hollywood hairstylist Cheryl Marks’ top five tips for maintaining vibrant hair colour.   

Tip 1: Hot water = faster colour fade 

While you may know that too much sun can cause colour to fade faster, too much hot water from the shower can have a similar effect. How does this work? When exposed to heat, our hair cuticles open. So, when showering, this allows the colour to wash out from our strands more easily. What’s the best way to prevent colour from washing out in the shower? Cheryl says: “It’s really important to give your post-shampoo locks a quick rinse of cool water to close that cuticle layer. This will also cut down on frizzies and fly-aways that lead to hair appearing dull.”   

Tip 2: Use clean products made for coloured hair 

“If you have coloured hair, it’s important to use a line of products specifically formulated to fight colour fade as well as keep your hair healthy and shiny,” says Cheryl. “It’s also important to look for collections that don’t contain sulphates and parabens as they can be a culprit when it comes to stripping hair of colour and natural oils.” For her own blonde hair, Cheryl swears by the HASK Colour Care line as it both prolongs the vibrancy of coloured hair and improves overall hair health and strength with nourishing ingredients rose oil, peach and hydrolysed quinoa. Tip 3: Change your shower filter 

You might be surprised by this one: the water coming out of your showerhead can have an impact on the longevity of your hair colour. As Cheryl explains, in many homes, tap water contains traces of unwanted minerals and chemicals like chlorine, metals and rust. If shower water contains these high levels of certain minerals it’s considered ‘hard water’, which can cause mineral buildup on your scalp and strands, and prevent moisture from penetrating the hair over time. This high mineral content can also lead to dull, lifeless strands and affect the overall vibrancy of your colour. An easy fix? Install a hard water shower filter and change it at least once a year to avoid unnecessary buildup and keep your hair looking much fresher.   

Tip 4: Deep condition, deep condition, deep condition 

A little extra TLC is always a welcome treat for dry strands but is especially crucial for colour-treated hair, which has a high likelihood of becoming dehydrated after being dyed. Tip 5: Protect before styling and turn down the heat

If you have coloured hair… you need to be extra careful when styling with any kind of heat (and that includes the blow-dryer!). “Always, ALWAYS use a heat protectant prior to any type of heat styling,” advises Cheryl.
